WOMEN READING ALOUD is an international organization dedicated to the power of the writer’s voice. WRA believes in providing space for artistic growth. Founded in New Jersey in 2003, it offers writing workshops modeled after the Amherst Writers and Artists Method, the Author Series and Work-in-Progress Series, Writing and Yoga Program, conferences and retreats where women writers can explore their “authentic” voices. Founded on the 3-in-1 principle, WOMEN READING ALOUD focuses on the equal value of the writer, the reader, and the listener. All genres are welcome. WRA encourages writers to cherish their own voices, as well as the voices of others, as they travel the writer’s journey.
WOMEN READING ALOUD offers writers a supportive community. From larger special events where writers gather to read their work aloud, to workshops where they write spontaneously, to our annual international and domestic retreats and special events, WRA provides a warm atmosphere conducive to exploration and discovery. Our goals are for participants to learn something new, to affirm their own writing lives, and to face the blank page with renewed spirit. WRA continues to increase its selection of writing workshops with an eye towards what the writer needs in today’s market. Although WOMEN READING ALOUD is not a membership organization, we recognize that a comaraderie develops when writers commit to a series, a weekend retreat, or a critiquing salon. In 2011, WRA expanded its Writing and Yoga program and also reached across the ocean. In June, 2017, Julie Maloney will return to lead the seventh WRA retreat on the eco–island of Alonnisos on the Aegean Sea in Greece. All workshops follow the Amherst Writers and Artists Method, setting the gold standard for writing in a “kula” – a community sensitive to energies given and received from the writing circle. Once a writer reads aloud, her voice automatically becomes part of the writing circle created by WRA. Annual retreats include the Writer’s Weekend Retreat in Sea Girt, NJ, the 10 Day Greece Writer’s Retreat on the island of Alonnisos, and the Writing and Yoga Retreat in the South of France.
