This colourful village clinging to the cliffside is Riomaggiore, one of five villages built along the Ligurian coastline which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the areas that I lead workshops to every year in Italy.

I made this image during a workshop that I lead in Cinque Terre every year. An exposure of 2 minutes during sunset created the movement in the clouds and smoothed out the water. I used a Nikon D810 with my favourite lens, the 24-70mm @24mm.

Photographer's Profile / Services / Events:

Tom Mackie is recognised as one of the world’s finest landscape photographers, his understanding of light, perspective and colour the hallmark that has established his name both internationally and here in the UK where he is based.

A photographer all his working life, Tom began his career with a five-year stint as an industrial and architectural photographer in Los Angeles fresh from gaining his degree in commercial photography. Travelling extensively through the vast, cinemascope terrain of the Western States during this period ignited a life-long passion for landscapes, and he realised the confines of a commercial studio were no longer going to be enough.

In 1985 he moved from his native US to the UK to pursue a full-time career as a landscape photographer, and rapidly made his name with calendars, books and magazine work for a wide range of clients. Architectural and travel commissions added to his repertoire, accolades followed from The British Institute of Professional Photographers, the Ilford Awards and the Business Calendar Awards, and his reputation as one of the world’s leading landscape photographers was sealed by his inclusion in The World’s Top Photographers: Landscape, published by RotoVision.

Tom Mackie has written several books, most notably Photos With Impact and Tom Mackie’s Landscape Photography Secrets, and numerous articles for photography magazines in the UK and abroad. He lectures to other professionals on the art of landscape photography, as well as running a series of acclaimed photography workshops in spectacular locations both in the UK and abroad.
