I have been drawn to angels ever since I discovered the images of the Angels of Pompeii. Long after its destruction by Vesuvius in 79 A.D. the angels remain. These frescoes of angels painted on the decaying walls of the ancient city have captivated me ever since. I have dreamed of visiting Italy for most of my adult life. It is only now in my autumn years this dream is coming true, allowing me to teach what I love!
During this exceptional week, you will discover the angels of Orvieto to use in creating your own fresco angels. My Fractured Angels are not the heavenly flawless angels. They are flawed, cracked and fractured. ‘There is a crack, there is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in,’ – lyrics by Leonard Cohen serve as my inspiration.
With camera and sketchbook in hand, you will gather daily inspiration from the beauty and mystery of Orvieto. Learn how to incorporate these images in your artwork by transferring them onto a ‘plastered’ wood or fabric substrate. The result has the feel of an aged fresco, imparting a sense of ancient grace to your angel.
